Ir. Milena Ivkovic, MSc Arch
Formally trained in architecture, Milena Ivkovic is an experienced researcher and designer in the field of public space design. Her broad view on urbanity, technology and end-users has been shaped by her own multicultural background and work experience in diverse international environments, from Netherlands and the Balkans, to Africa, China and Japan.
In 2011, Milena started Rotterdam-based office Blok74. The office focuses on developing new planning formats, such as urban gaming - a tool that uses gaming principles to understand and change the built environment. Since its start, Blok74 has successfully realized a series of interactive urban gaming workshops, resulting in public space action plans, collaborative design projects and urban policy adjustments. These specific workshops bring different stakeholders to the table and help initiate an innovative and open urban planning process.
Since 2010, Milena collaborates with Brussels-based Yellow Design Foundation, (YDF) a European platform for community-based design, on the projects dealing with urban mobility and public space quality. Between 2012 and 2015, Milena was also a chairwoman of the YDF. YDF worked on research and consultancy projects of UN-HABITAT, City of Brussels public transport authority STIB /MIVB, Belgium Railways NMSB and UIC. (International Railway Union)
Between 1999 en 2010 Milena has worked for the renowned Dutch architecture and urban design offices, as well as for the City of Rotterdam Public Design Service. In the period 2000-2005 Milena has worked on several large international urban planning consultancies on sustainable cities development in China, North Africa and Europe. The consultancy included public space design, integration of public transport networks and preservation of natural eco-systems within built environment. In the period 2001 – 2007 she was a team member of International Consultancy Projects of KuiperCompagnons Rotterdam office. During that period, Milena is in charge of public space design and advanced spatial analytics for the cities of Wuhan, Suqian en Hangzhou. In the period between 2008 en 2010 Milena is a senior urban designer at Rein Geurtsen and Partners Rotterdam office.
Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Milena received her Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture and Urbanism degrees at Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade. Next to teaching urban design at the Department of Urbanism of the same university, she collaborated with the Serbian Institute of Architecture and Urbanism (IAUS). Her research included exploring the reconstruction of public spaces of the the post-communism cities.
